What Causes Diabetes?
Diabetes (diabetes mellitus) is classed as a metabolic disorder. Metabolism in layman's language would mean how our body mechanism utilizes the digested food for our daily needs. Whatever we eat most of it is broken down into Glucose. It is the main source of energy for our body.
The digested food when broken down into glucose finds its way into our blood. However, glucose needs it gate pass insulin to enter into the cells. As soon as the glucose enters cells, the blood-glucose level drops.
One can be categorized to be Type- 1 diabetic if the insulin production by the pancreas is stopped completely. Patients with type 1 diabetes will need to take insulin injections for the rest of their life.
Type-2 diabetic patient's pancreas doesn't produce enough insulin or the body doesn't react properly to insulin. 90% of the cases are Type-2 diabetes. Typically a progressive disease - it gradually gets worse - and the patient will probably end up have to take insulin, usually in tablet form.
Being overweight, physically inactive and eating the wrong foods all contribute to our risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
